United Nations Security Council (UNSC)

The UNSC was established in 1945 under the UN Charter as the primary organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

  • It consists of 15 members, including 5 permanent members (P5)—United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom, and France—with veto power.
  • The remaining 10 non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms by the United Nations General Assembly.
  • Decisions on substantive matters require at least 9 affirmative votes including concurrence of all P5 members.
  • It has the authority to impose sanctions, authorize peacekeeping missions, and approve use of force.
  • India has been elected 8 times as a non-permanent member, most recently for 2021–22. ....
