All-Weather Radar Imaging Satellite

Why is it in News?

RISAT-2B satellite was launched on May 22 from Sriharikota and it marked the resumption of a vital ring of Indian all-seeing radar imaging satellites. Two were launched earlier in 2009 and 2012. At least a half-dozen could be launched in the near future. These would provide reconnaissance capability from about 500 km in space and a comprehensive vigil over the country.


The United Nations Human Rights Council

Why is it in News?

  • Geneva based Human Rights Council’s (HRC) Special Rapporteurs recently submitted a note to the government asking about steps taken on addressing the alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir which were highlighted by a June 2018 report of the UN Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR).

Implementation Drawbacks In PMFBY

Retaliatory Import Tariffs On US Products

India extended the deadline to impose retaliatory import tariffs on 29 US products till June 16 from the earlier date of May 16 with a hope to resolve trade issues with the US and also because the US has not withdrawn the Generalised System of Preferences which was to happen in the beginning of May.


Fall Armyworm

A pest ‘fall armyworm’ (FAW) had damaged 3,082.5 MT maize across 2,055 hectares of land in Lunglei district, Mizoram. The FAW spread to all the eight districts of Assam from Lunglei and have also damaged crops in Manipur.


US – Iran Relations

Why is it in News?

The US on 15th May instructed all non-emergency staff to pull out of its embassy in Baghdad, Iraq and consulate in Arbil as tensions between the US and Iran is rising. Arbil is the Iraqi Kurdish regional capital, in northern Iraq.
