Uttarakhand Approves Ordinance for Riot Damage Recovery

On 4th March, Uttarakhand mandated recovery of losses from riot damage, imposed fines on rioters, and set up a Claims Tribunal.

• The Ordinance allows fines of up to Rs 8 lakh to be levied on rioters.
• Injured individuals' treatment costs and riot-related expenses to be recovered from responsible parties.
• Formal Claims Tribunal to assess losses and recover compensation established.
• Move comes after recent violence during anti-encroachment drive in Nainital district, where properties were damaged, resulting in casualties.
