MoU on Pantsir Air Defence System

On 11th November 2024, at the 5th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC) Subgroup meeting in Goa, Bharat Dynamics Ltd. (BDL) and Russia’s Rosoboronexport (ROE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop advanced variants of the Pantsir air defence system.

Key Points

Capabilities of Pantsir System: The Pantsir is a versatile, mobile air defence system designed to protect vital military and infrastructure targets from aerial threats like aircraft, drones, and guided munitions.
It combines surface-to-air missiles with dual 30mm cannons, allowing for multi-layered defence, with the ability to detect and engage targets up to 36 km away and altitudes of up to 15 km.
Strategic Importance for India: This MoU enhances India’s air defence capabilities, adding to the country's defensive options against fast-moving threats.
The system’s flexibility across various terrains makes it an essential asset amid evolving regional security dynamics.
Focus on Self-Reliance and Technology Transfer: The collaboration will explore technology transfer, local manufacturing, and development of Pantsir variants, in alignment with India’s “Make in India” initiative to boost self-reliance in defence production.
