Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities

On 12th March 2026, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities signed an MoU in New Delhi.The initiative aims to build India’s first integrated life-cycle support model for persons with hearing impairment.

  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities was carved out of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on 12.05.2012 as the Department of Disability Affairs to ensure greater focus on policy matters to effectively address disability issues.
  • It was renamed as Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan)in 2014.
  • The Department acts as a nodal agency for matters pertaining to disability and persons with disabilities.
  • It is primarily entrusted with the task of empowerment of person with disabilities to build an inclusive society.
  • It works to ensure equal opportunities for their growth and development to lead productive, safe and dignified life.
