In April 2026, The Uttar Pradesh government launched the ‘Safe Mobility Program’ to promote women’s empowerment through safe transport and employment generation.

  • The initiative focuses on training women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) as e-rickshaw drivers, ensuring safe and accessible mobility for women and girls.
  • Around 1,000 e-rickshaws are being provided to SHG women in the initial phase.
  • The programme has been launched in districts like Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Kaushambi, and Jhansi, with expansion planned in other regions.
  • The scheme is implemented under the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihoods Mission with support from Development Alternatives.
  • So far, 119 women have become entrepreneurs, 629 have received training, and 244 have obtained driving licences.
  • The initiative enhances women’s safety, especially in rural areas, by providing female-driven transport services.
  • Participating women are earning over ₹3 lakh annually on average, strengthening their financial independence.
  • The programme also improves access to education and workplaces while promoting self-reliance and rural employment.
