Recently, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) gave recommendations which aim to streamline the regulatory landscape of M2M embedded SIM (eSIM) in India.

• Emphasis on security through proper Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures.
• Framework for profile switching of eSIMs and swapping of SM-SR recommended for flexibility and competition.
• Implementation of recommendations expected to promote growth in the M2M eSIM segment and stimulate development of a homegrown ecosystem.
• Key features include mandatory conversion of communication profiles, permission for owning and managing Subscription Manager-Secure Routing (SM-SR), and flexibility for profile installation on M2M eSIMs.
• Challenges in implementation addressed, with restrictions on the use of IMSI series allocated by ITU at this stage.
