On 7th January 2025, Union Minister unveiled two major initiatives to enhance Kandla Port’s capacity, with a total investment of Rs. 57,000 crores.
Key Points
- Mega Shipbuilding Facility: A Rs. 30,000 crore initiative will establish a facility for building Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC), capable of producing 32 new ships and repairing 50 annually.
- Facility Features: The shipbuilding facility will span 8,000 acres, including a marina, fishing harbour, townships, and a marine industrial cluster.
- New Cargo Terminal: A Rs. 27,000 crore investment will develop a new cargo terminal at Tuna, increasing Kandla Port’s capacity by 135 MTPA.
- Cargo Handling Upgrades: The terminal will include advanced systems for dry bulk cargo and convert existing jetties to handle liquid cargo, reducing tanker vessel waiting times.
