INS Guldar: India’s First Underwater Museum

On 23rd February 2025, the Indian Navy officially handed over the decommissioned Landing Ship Tank INS Guldar to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).

The ship is set to be converted into India’s first underwater museum and artificial reef.

Environmental Considerations: The conversion process will begin with a thorough cleaning of the ship to eliminate any pollutants or hazardous materials, ensuring compliance with environmental guidelines.
Tourism and Conservation: The project aims to enhance marine conservation awareness, generate livelihood opportunities for coastal communities, and establish India as a significant player in the growing field of underwater tourism.
Collaborative Effort: The Indian Navy will also benefit from the project, using the scuttled ship site for diving training, fostering collaboration between the Navy and MTDC.
