India Begins Trial of Hydrogen-Powered Trucks

On 4th March 2025, Centre launched India’s first hydrogen-powered truck fleet, developed by Tata Motors, marking a major step toward the country’s net-zero emissions goal by 2070.
Key Points
- Launch of Hydrogen Truck Trials: The trials will run for 24 months, testing 16 hydrogen-powered trucks on major freight routes such as Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and Surat.
 - Hydrogen as the Fuel of the Future: Union minister emphasized hydrogen’s role in reducing emissions and advancing India’s energy self-reliance, calling it a key solution for sustainable heavy-duty transportation.
 - Infrastructure Development: The fleet will be supported by hydrogen refueling stations set up by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).
 - India’s 2030 Green Hydrogen Targets: Plans include producing 5 million metric tons of Green Hydrogen annually, installing 60-100 GW of electrolyser capacity, and cutting 50 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
