IICT Mumbai to Boost India’s AVGC-XR Sector

On 3rd May 2025, India announced it will establish the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai to become a national hub for animation, VFX, gaming, comics, and extended reality.

  • The Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) will be modelled after IITs and IIMs, serving as a national centre of excellence for the AVGC-XR sector.
  • The central government has allocated Rs 400 crore for IICT, while the Maharashtra government has allotted 10 acres of land at Mumbai Film City for its permanent campus.
  • Leading global tech companies including Google, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, NVIDIA, Star India, and Adobe will collaborate long-term to shape IICT into a world-class institute.
  • Microsoft, Google, and Meta signed MoUs with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the WAVE Summit to support education, research, and innovation in AVGC-XR.
  • IICT will initially operate from a government facility at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) before moving to its full-scale campus in Goregaon.
  • The institute’s infrastructure will include virtual production setups, immersive studios, gaming labs, animation suites, editing bays, and smart classrooms.
