Northeast India’s First Geothermal Well Drilled

  • 08 May 2025

On 5th May 2025, the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) completed the region’s first geothermal production well in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, marking a milestone for clean energy in the Northeast.

  • The Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) drilled the geothermal well after two years of geochemical and structural surveys across western Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The well, located in Dirang, West Kameng district, is the first of its kind in Northeast India and is designed for direct-use geothermal applications.
  • Reservoir temperatures at the site are estimated at 115°C, indicating medium-to-high enthalpy and suitability for eco-friendly solutions like drying, space heating, and cold storage.
  • The drilling initiative is a collaborative effort between CESHS, Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Iceland’s Geotropy ehf, and Guwahati Boring Service.
  • Geological mapping in the area revealed features consistent with extensional normal faults, enabling precise drilling with minimal environmental impact.
