UGC’s Notice to 89 Institutions over Ragging

  • 13 Jun 2025

In June 2025, The University Grants Commission (UGC) issued show-cause notices to 89 educational institutions, including reputed IITs and IIMs, for failing to comply with its 2009 anti-ragging regulations.

  • The UGC has warned that failure to comply with anti-ragging guidelines could lead to serious consequences such as the withdrawal of funding and derecognition of the concerned institutions.
  • Institutions have been directed to furnish documentary proof of anti-ragging measures implemented on campus and submit online undertakings from each student within a 30-day deadline
  • The lack of student undertakings, as mandated by the UGC, is viewed as a violation that directly compromises campus safety amid rising national concerns about ragging incidents.
  • The UGC has reiterated that the intent of its measures is preventive in nature, encouraging institutions to proactively establish mechanisms to curb ragging rather than act only after incidents occur.
