On 6th July 2025, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology inaugurated the Phenome India ‘National Biobank’ at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in New Delhi, marking a major step in India’s precision medicine and genomics research.

  • The Biobank is designed to support a large-scale nationwide cohort study by collecting comprehensive genomic, lifestyle, and clinical data from 10,000 individuals.
  • It aims to represent India’s rich diversity, capturing samples from various geographical regions, ethnic groups, and socio-economic strata to ensure inclusivity in medical research.
  • Researchers expect the Biobank to play a pivotal role in early disease diagnosis, enhancing therapeutic targeting, and improving public health responses to chronic and complex diseases.
  • The data gathered will help combat conditions such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and rare genetic diseases by enabling tailored medical interventions.
