India Unveils Aluminium and Copper Vision Documents

On 4th July 2025, India unveiled its Aluminium Vision Document and Copper Vision Document at an international conference in Hyderabad, outlining ambitious plans to scale production six-fold by 2047 and ensure sustainable growth.

- Aluminium Production Goal: Ramp up aluminium output from 4.5 MTPA to 37 MTPA by 2047, requiring investments over ₹20 lakh crore.
- Copper Demand Surge: Anticipates a six-fold increase in copper demand by 2047, with plans to add 5 million tonnes per annum of smelting and refining capacity by 2030.
- Raw Material Security: Focus on expanding bauxite production to 150 MTPA by 2047 and enhancing domestic recycling and circularity for aluminium. For copper, securing overseas mineral assets and reducing import dependence are priorities.
- Sustainability & Low-Carbon Tech: Promote low-carbon technologies and transition to environmentally responsible mining and production practices.
- Strategic Role: Aluminium’s role in clean energy systems, electric mobility, and infrastructure highlighted, while copper’s importance in energy transition, solar power, and EVs emphasized.
- Global Ambitions: India aims to capture a 10% share of the global aluminium market by 2047, becoming Aatmanirbhar in production and exports.
