India Tops Global Real-Time Payments Chart

On 20th July 2025, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) hailed India as a global leader in fast payments, with UPI processing over Rs. 24.03 lakh crore in June 2025 alone.

  • India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed a record 18.39 billion transactions in June 2025, marking a 32% year-on-year increase from 13.88 billion transactions in June 2024.
  • UPI now powers 85% of all digital transactions in India and contributes nearly 50% of all global real-time digital payments, making it the world’s leading platform.
  • The platform processes over 640 million transactions daily, surpassing Visa’s 639 million and showcasing India’s leadership in transaction volume.
  • UPI supports 491 million individuals and 65 million merchants by connecting 675 banks under a unified digital system that ensures smooth and interoperable transactions.
  • Since its 2016 launch by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has played a critical role in financial inclusion by offering accessible digital services in rural and semi-urban areas.
  • The IMF attributed India’s digital payment success to strategic digital groundwork and a clear vision of leveraging technology for inclusive national development.
