Kaziranga Records 3rd-Highest Tiger Density in India

On 29th July 2025, officials released the 2024 summary report, titled ‘Status of Tigers in the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve’, presenting findings from a Phase IV tiger monitoring exercise conducted across the Eastern Assam, Nagaon, and Biswanath Wildlife Divisions.

  • Increase in Tigers: The survey documented 148 tigers in the reserve, up from 104 recorded in 2022, 99 in 2018 and 96 in 2014.
  • Tiger Reserve Status: Declared a National Park in 1974 and designated as a Tiger Reserve in 2006.
  • UNESCO Recognition: Declared a World Heritage Site in 1985.
  • BirdLife International Recognition: Recognized as an Important Bird Area for its avian diversity.

  • Rich Fauna: Home to 70% of the world’s population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, along with elephants, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, and tigers.
  • Migratory Birds: Hosts several migratory species in winter including the lesser white-fronted goose, ferruginous duck, Baer’s pochard duck, greater and lesser adjutant, which migrate from Central Asia.
