Pacific Island Leaders Summit

  • 09 Sep 2025

On 8th September 2025, Pacific Island leaders commenced a week-long summit in Honiara, Solomon Islands, where they are expected to deliberate on a wide range of regional issues, including security, climate change, and international partnerships.

  • The summit is anticipated to endorse an “Ocean of Peace” declaration, signalling the leaders’ intent to preserve regional stability and mitigate the escalating rivalry between the United States and China in the Pacific.
  • Member states are likely to extend support to Australia’s bid to host the COP31 United Nations climate summit, reflecting Canberra’s pledge to collaborate closely with island nations to highlight challenges such as rising sea levels and intensifying extreme weather events.
  • The Solomon Islands cancelled the participation of two dozen donor partners, including China, Taiwan, and the United States, after Beijing reportedly pressed to exclude Taiwan from the forum’s proceedings.
  • Among the 18 forum members, diplomatic allegiances remain diverse, with three maintaining official ties with Taiwan, three having defence compacts with the United States, and several functioning as French territories, while thirteen recognize China diplomatically.
