IUCN and IRENA Partner for Nature-Positive Renewable Energy

  • 10 Oct 2025

On 9th October 2025, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, marking a milestone collaboration to advance renewable energy solutions that protect both people and the planet.

  • The MoU establishes a collaborative framework between IUCN and IRENA to ensure that the global shift towards renewable energy not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also safeguards biodiversity and supports sustainable development.
  • Through this partnership, IUCN and IRENA will work jointly to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, while identifying and minimizing potential environmental and social impacts.
  • The collaboration aims to develop tools and methodologies to assess biodiversity impacts of renewable projects, ensuring that energy infrastructure such as solar, wind, and hydro installations are planned with ecological sensitivity.
  • Both organizations will focus on creating conservation-linked energy projects, promoting co-benefits such as habitat restoration, community resilience, and green job creation aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
