Justice Surya Kant Takes Oath as 53rd Chief Justice of India

On 23rd November 2025, Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
- The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Union Ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and J.P. Nadda.
- Born in 1962 in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant began practising law in 1984 at the Hisar District Court, specialising in Constitutional, Service, and Civil matters.
- He served as the youngest Advocate General of Haryana in the year 2000, representing universities, boards, corporations, banks, and the High Court.
- He was elevated as a permanent Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004 and later appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018.
- Justice Surya Kant was elevated to the Supreme Court of India in May 2019.
