  • 01 Dec 2025

On 28th November 2025, the Indian Navy received Taragiri, the fourth Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth frigate, marking a major milestone in India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.

Key Points

  • The Indian Navy formally took delivery of Taragiri at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, reflecting steady progress under India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision in complex warship design and construction.
  • Taragiri (Yard 12653), the third Project 17A vessel built by MDL, carries forward the legacy of the former INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served the Navy for 33 years from 1980 to 2013.
  • The frigate incorporates advanced stealth shaping, improved automation, and enhanced survivability features, representing a modern generational upgrade in India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
  • Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and monitored by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai, the ship has been constructed using an integrated methodology that significantly streamlines the build process.
