Master Sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar

On 17 December 2025, renowned Indian sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar passed away at his residence in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, at the age of 100 after prolonged age-related illness.

  • He was one of India’s most celebrated sculptors, best known for designing the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat.
  • Born in 1925 in the Dhule district of present-day Maharashtra, Sutar showed exceptional artistic talent early in life and went on to shape modern monumental sculpture in India.
  • He was a gold medallist from the prestigious J. J. School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai, an institution that played a key role in refining his artistic vision and technical mastery.
  • Among his most iconic works are the statue of Mahatma Gandhi seated in a meditative posture and the equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj installed on the Parliament premises.
