On 27th January 2026, India and Canada signed a Joint Statement on Energy Cooperation on the sidelines of India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 in Goa, reaffirming their commitment to strengthen bilateral collaboration in conventional and clean energy sectors.
Key Points
- Revival of Energy Dialogue: The meeting witnessed the launch of the renewed India–Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue, underscoring the importance of energy security and diversity of supply for economic stability and growth.
- Leadership-Level Direction: The engagement follows directions from the Prime Ministers of India and Canada during their interaction at the G7 Summit in June 2025 in Kananaskis, Canada, to restart senior ministerial and working-level engagements.
- Complementary Energy Strengths: Canada highlighted its ambition to emerge as an energy superpower through LNG projects, crude oil exports via the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline, and LPG exports, while India’s role as a major oil consumer, LNG importer, and refining hub was emphasised.
- Expanding Energy Trade: Both sides agreed to deepen bilateral energy trade, including supply of Canadian LNG, LPG, and crude oil to India, and export of refined petroleum products from India to Canada.
