On 14th February 2026, the Government of India launched the PM RAHAT scheme to provide cashless and timely medical treatment to road accident victims across the country.
Key Points
- Cashless Treatment Coverage: Under the PM RAHAT scheme, every eligible road accident victim will receive cashless treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh for a period of seven days from the date of the accident.
- Golden Hour Focus: The scheme aims to ensure timely hospitalization during the critical “Golden Hour,” as nearly half of accident deaths can be prevented with prompt medical care.
- Access Through ERSS 112: Victims, Good Samaritans, or bystanders can call the 112 helpline to locate the nearest designated hospital and request ambulance services for immediate assistance.
- Emergency Stabilisation Support: Stabilisation treatment will be provided for up to 24 hours in non-life-threatening cases and up to 48 hours in life-threatening situations, subject to police verification.
- Technology-Driven Implementation: The scheme integrates the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (eDAR) platform with the National Health Authority’s Transaction Management System to enable seamless coordination from accident reporting to hospital treatment and claim settlement.
- Funding Through MVAF: Hospitals will be reimbursed through the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, with insurance companies contributing in insured cases and government support covering uninsured and hit-and-run incidents.
- Time-Bound Claim Settlement: Claims approved by State Health Agencies will be settled within 10 days, ensuring financial certainty for hospitals and uninterrupted emergency care.
- District-Level Grievance Mechanism: A Grievance Redressal Officer under the District Road Safety Committee will address complaints and ensure accountability in implementation.
