SC Proposes Women-Only VP Post in SCBA
- 09 May 2026
On 8th May 2026, the Supreme Court proposed the creation of a permanent women-only Vice-President post in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) from 2027 onwards, while continuing reservation of the Secretary post for women in the 2026-27 elections.
Key Points
- Women Leadership Push: The Court observed that the reform could eventually pave the way for the first woman President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
- Secretary Post Reservation Continues: For the upcoming 2026-27 SCBA elections, the Secretary post will remain reserved for women members.
- General Body Consultation: The Court directed the SCBA to convene a General Body Meeting to discuss and consider the proposed permanent women-only Vice-President position.
- Women Lawyers’ Representation: Several women lawyers opposed shifting reservation solely to the Vice-President post, arguing that the Secretary’s post has greater operational importance in day-to-day functioning.
- Restoration of Previous Arrangement: The Court restored last year’s arrangement reserving the Secretary post, two senior executive committee posts, and three executive committee posts for women.
- Institutional Reform Approach: The bench emphasised that reforms in bar associations should evolve through participation and consensus among lawyers rather than judicial imposition.
- Judicial Commitment: The Court reiterated its commitment to enhancing women’s representation in legal institutions and bar bodies.
- Broader Reservation Measures: Over the past year, the Supreme Court has introduced 33% reservation for women in bar associations and approved 30% reservation for women in bar councils.
- Significance: The move is aimed at strengthening gender inclusion, leadership opportunities, and institutional representation for women in the legal profession.
