On 27th May 2026, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) informed that it has initiated regulatory action against the unauthorised online sale and advertisement of hazardous chemicals and explosive substances on digital platforms.
- The action was taken under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 due to concerns related to consumer safety and national security.
- The move followed reports regarding the online listing and sale of regulated substances on platforms such as IndiaMART, Justdial, Sigma-Aldrich India, Dial4Trade and ExportersIndia.
- The substances under scrutiny included Ammonium Nitrate, Gun Powder, Picric Acid and Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN) – all of which are regulated, restricted or prohibited under various laws in India.
- The CCPA issued notices to the concerned platforms seeking details regarding seller identities, licensing compliance, buyer verification systems, quantities sold, import details and regulatory approvals.
