Recently, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) introduced a series of user-friendly reforms under the Prime Minister’s Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) framework to improve public Wi-Fi accessibility and digital connectivity.

  • Key reforms included QR-based authentication for laptops and secondary devices to simplify user access to public Wi-Fi networks.
  • The new measures also introduced flexible short-duration Wi-Fi plans to provide affordable and convenient internet access for users.
  • DoT further standardised PM-WANI hotspot names to enable easier identification of authorised hotspots and improve reliability for consumers.
  • PM-WANI is a government initiative launched to promote public Wi-Fi hotspots across India through interoperable and low-cost broadband infrastructure.
