International Day of UN Peacekeepers

On 29th May 2026, the permanent missions of India and Austria to the United Nations organised a solemn event on the occasion of International Day of UN Peacekeepers (29 May) to pay tributes to the supreme sacrifice of the fallen peacekeepers.

Observed under the theme “Invest in Peace”, this year’s International Day called for decisive action to ensure civilian and military peacekeepers have the resources to carry out their vital mandates.
Since the first peacekeeping mission was established in 1948, over 2 million peacekeepers from 125 countries have served under the UN flag.
India, among the largest troop-contributing countries, has deployed nearly three lakh troops in more than 50 UN Peacekeeping Missions since 1948.
According to the Indian mission, about 184 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice in defence of international peace and security
