International Day of UN Peacekeepers

On 29th May 2026, the permanent missions of India and Austria to the United Nations organised a solemn event on the occasion of International Day of UN Peacekeepers (29 May) to pay tributes to the supreme sacrifice of the fallen peacekeepers.
- Observed under the theme “Invest in Peace”, this year’s International Day called for decisive action to ensure civilian and military peacekeepers have the resources to carry out their vital mandates.
- Since the first peacekeeping mission was established in 1948, over 2 million peacekeepers from 125 countries have served under the UN flag.
- India, among the largest troop-contributing countries, has deployed nearly three lakh troops in more than 50 UN Peacekeeping Missions since 1948.
- According to the Indian mission, about 184 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice in defence of international peace and security
