In June 2026, Tamil Nadu released the findings of the third synchronised Nilgiri Tahr survey, estimating the population of the state's animal, the Nilgiri Tahr, at 1,364.

• The population increased by 4.68% from 1,303 recorded in 2025.
• The latest estimate represents an overall increase of more than 32% compared to 2024.
• The Anamalai Hills supported 44.87% of the total Nilgiri Tahr population, making it the species' strongest habitat.
• The Nilgiris accounted for 29.25% of the population.
