In June 2026, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) introduced a series of technology-driven initiatives to strengthen maintenance of National Highways and Expressways.

  • NHAI has issued comprehensive guidelines for mechanized maintenance of drainage systems in urban and built-up areas to improve efficiency and quality of highway upkeep.
  • NHAI has also issued guidelines for deploying Automatic Pothole Filling, Compacting and Patching Machines for faster and more effective road repairs.
  • NHAI is a statutory body under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • It was established in 1988 under the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988.
