- He is regarded as a pioneer of rural cinema in India and is credited with introducing a new cinematic style that focused on village life and social themes.
- Throughout his illustrious career, he won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards and six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
- His films often featured music composed by Ilaiyaraaja, and the director-composer duo played a significant role in shaping modern Tamil cinema.
