On 10th June 2026, renowned Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja passed away in Chennai at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness.

Bharathiraja was a celebrated director, producer and actor who revolutionised Tamil cinema by bringing rural life, natural landscapes and realistic storytelling to the mainstream.
He is regarded as a pioneer of rural cinema in India and is credited with introducing a new cinematic style that focused on village life and social themes.
Throughout his illustrious career, he won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards and six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
His films often featured music composed by Ilaiyaraaja, and the director-composer duo played a significant role in shaping modern Tamil cinema.
