NITI Aayog Unveils Bioeconomy Roadmap

On 16th July 2026, NITI Aayog released a roadmap to transform India into a leading global bioeconomy, targeting rapid growth, innovation and employment by 2035.
Key Points
- Growth Target: India's bioeconomy is projected to reach USD 691 billion by 2035 and USD 2.6 trillion by 2047.
- Economic Contribution: The sector is expected to contribute 8–10% of India's GDP by 2047.
- Employment: The roadmap aims to create over 30 million high-value jobs in biotechnology and allied sectors.
- National BioMissions: Six BioMissions are proposed covering gene therapy, synthetic biology, climate-resilient agriculture, disease surveillance, marine biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals.
- BioEconomy Growth Fund: A ₹50,000 crore BioEconomy Growth Fund (2026–2035) has been proposed to support research commercialisation and manufacturing.
- Policy Support: The roadmap recommends PLI-style incentives, regulatory reforms, faster approvals and stronger intellectual property protection.
