Khijadia Bird Sanctuary – Black-necked Stork

In August 2026, a study recorded four active Black-necked Stork nests at Khijadia Bird Sanctuary, Gujarat.

  • The study was conducted by GEER Foundation researchers between July 2024 and March 2025.
  • The sanctuary supported a peak seasonal population of 21 Black-necked Storks during the study period.
  • All four nests were found on Neltuma juliflora, an invasive tree locally called gando baval.
  • The Black-necked Stork is one of India’s largest wetland birds, scientifically named Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus.
  • The study recorded coordinated biparental care, with parents replacing each other during foraging.
