Vulture Reintroduction in Maharashtra

Recently, the Melghat and Pench Tiger Reserves have emerged as successful sites for captive-bred vulture reintroduction.

• BNHS released 29 vultures across both reserves between December 2025 and January 2026.
• The released vultures recorded survival rates of up to 78%.
• The reserves provide prey-rich and inviolate habitats suitable for released vultures.
• The success supports shifting bird-release enclosures closer to protected wildlife habitats.
• The initiative strengthens efforts to restore India’s declining vulture population.
