Roadmap for Drug-Free India by 2029

On 6th September 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled a three-year roadmap and vision document for narcotics control, with an aim to achieve a drug-free India by 2029.

Key Points

Mission Mode: The 2026–29 period will follow a mission-mode approach with measurable targets and timelines.
National Security: Narcotics trafficking is being treated as a major national security challenge.
Four-Tier NCORD: The government established a four-tier Narco Coordination Centre mechanism in 2019.
State Task Forces: Dedicated anti-narcotics task forces were formed across all States and Union Territories.
Network-Based Enforcement: Enforcement has shifted from seizure-focused action towards dismantling entire trafficking networks.
Drug Seizures: Over 1.19 crore kg of narcotic and psychotropic substances were seized during 2014–2026.
Four Pillars: The roadmap focuses on intelligence-led enforcement, precursor control, demand and harm reduction, and capacity building.
Synthetic Drugs: Greater emphasis will be placed on controlling synthetic drugs and chemical precursors.
