7th Edition of National Formulary of India 2026 Released

On September 21, 2026, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel launched the 7th edition of the National Formulary of India (NFI) 2026 in New Delhi. On this occasion, the government-approved Biovigilance Programme of India was also announced.
Key Facts:
- NFI 2026: Prepared by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), NFI 2026 contains 34 chapters, 20 appendices, and 653 drugs, including 42 fixed-dose combinations and 30 immunologics. It aims to guide healthcare professionals on the rational, safe, and evidence-based use of medicines.
- Biovigilance Programme: The government approved the Biovigilance Programme of India. Under this, the IPC will play a leading role in reporting, evaluating, monitoring, and preventing adverse events related to organ and tissue transplantation, expanding patient safety alongside pharmacovigilance and materiovigilance.
- Digital Safety Initiatives: The launch included guidance documents for hospitals to monitor adverse events related to medical devices, as well as the ADR-PvPI 2.0 mobile app for iOS. NFI 2026 has also been made available digitally.
- ADR Monitoring Network: Approximately 1,150 Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Monitoring Centres are operational across public and private hospitals and medical colleges in the country. The government plans to extend this surveillance network to the primary healthcare level.
- India's Global Progress: According to the Minister, India’s contribution to the WHO Patient Safety/Pharmacovigilance database climbed from 123rd rank during 2009–14 to 8th rank globally. Furthermore, around 25 countries recognize the Indian Pharmacopoeia, and IPC became a member of the Pharmacopoeial Discussion Group in 2023.
- Pharmacovigilance Week: The 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week was observed from September 17–23, 2026, under the theme: "Promoting Rational Use of Medicines Through Pharmacovigilance—A Step Towards Safer Healthcare."
