Uttar Pradesh Top Destination State in Domestic Tourism: NSO Survey

On September 23, 2026, the National Statistical Office (NSO) released the findings of the Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey conducted during the 80th NSS round (July 2025–June 2026).

Key Facts

  • Primary Travel Purpose: Among overnight trips with a 365-day reference period, pilgrimage and religious trips accounted for the highest share at 48%. In the 30-day reference period, overnight trips for social purposes accounted for 89%.
  • Top Destinations: In terms of total visitor-trips over the 365-day reference period, Uttar Pradesh ranked first with a 15.7% share, followed by Tamil Nadu (13.4%) in second, and Rajasthan (8%) in third.
  • Travel Expenditure: Over the 365-day period, health and medical trips incurred the highest average expenditure—Rs. 29,454 for rural households and Rs. 41,649 for urban households. In the 30-day period, business overnight trips recorded the highest expenditure.
  • Same-Day Trips: Social visits and shopping were the two main same-day travel categories for both rural and urban households, with shopping trips incurring the highest expenditure across both sectors.
