  • 05 Oct 2026

On October 5, 2026, the first international cargo voyage to Bangladesh was flagged off from the Bogibeel terminal in Dibrugarh, Assam, reviving Dibrugarh's post-independence river-trade route.

Key Highlights

  • Flag-off from Bogibeel: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the voyage from the Bogibeel terminal.
  • 1,080-Tonne Methanol Consignment: The initial cargo contains 1,080 tonnes of methanol produced by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APCL), Namrup. It is being transported to Bangladesh via two cargo vessels.
  • Brahmaputra to International Market: The vessels will travel through National Waterway-2 (NW-2) on the Brahmaputra River and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR) to reach Pangaon Port in Dhaka.
  • Dibrugarh's River-Trade Heritage: Prior to independence, the Brahmaputra was a vital route linking Upper Assam to global markets, with Dibrugarh serving as a major river port. This voyage restores that historic connectivity.
  • Boosting Northeast Connectivity: This initiative marks a crucial step toward connecting the Northeast to international markets through Bangladesh while promoting inland water transport as a cost-effective and eco-friendly freight medium.
