Quantum Security: Rs. 150 Crore Agreement Between TDB and QNu Labs

  • 17 Oct 2026

On October 16, 2026, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced a Rs. 150 crore agreement between the Technology Development Board (TDB) and QNu Labs for the development of quantum security technologies.

Key Facts

  • Project Objective: To develop indigenous quantum security technology in India to enhance the security of communications, navigation, and critical digital systems.
  • Financial Support: For the Rs. 300 crore project, TDB will provide Rs. 150 crore from the RDI fund as Optionally Convertible Debt.
  • Four Main Pillars: The project is based on identity security, location reliability, network security, and precise time determination.
  • Identity Security: Development of quantum-safe Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) and Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs). These hardware-based tools will assist in identity verification, authentication, and safeguarding cryptographic keys.
  • Spatial Integrity: Development of technologies like compact quantum magnetometers to measure ultra-subtle magnetic fields. These will be used to detect electromagnetic tampering and establish alternative navigation capabilities without GPS.
  • Network Security: Sharing secure keys via Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for safe communication, involving the development of chip-based and satellite-based technologies.
  • Time Determination: Extremely accurate and secure timing systems using Atomic Clocks, to be utilized in banking, telecommunications, and defense sectors.
  • Technical Goal & Significance: The project aims to elevate technologies from TRL-4/5 to TRL-9. TRL-9 represents technology proven in actual operational conditions, paving the way for the deployment of indigenous quantum security systems.
