Advanced Radar Procurement Agreement for the Indian Army
- 22 Oct 2026
On 21 October 2026, the Ministry of Defence signed a procurement contract worth approximately Rs. 770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for LLLR-I radars to enhance the air defense capability of the Indian Army.
- Capabilities: This radar can detect, track, and prioritize fighter jet-sized targets as well as mini and micro drones based on threat levels.
- Advanced Technology: LLLR-I is a Pulse-Doppler, Software-Defined Radar incorporating AESA antenna, Gallium Nitride (GaN) amplifiers, and digital beamforming technology.
- 360-Degree Surveillance: Four fixed phased-array antenna panels provide all-direction coverage. The absence of mechanically rotating parts increases the reliability of the system.
- Indigenous Development: LLLR-I is described as an upgraded version of the Ashlesh radar designed by DRDO's Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE).
- Operational Adaptability: Lightweight and man-portable, this radar can be deployed in plains, deserts, and high-altitude areas.
- LLLR-I Expansion: Stands for Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar. It is used for the identification and surveillance of low-flying aerial targets.
