ISRO Launches NVS-03 Navigation Satellite
- 31 Oct 2026
On 30 October 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the NVS-03 satellite aboard the GSLV-F18 rocket. This mission strengthens India's indigenous navigation system, NavIC.
Key Facts
- Launch Site: NVS-03 was launched at 11:51 PM from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
- 20th Flight of GSLV: GSLV-F18 marked the 20th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). It successfully injected NVS-03 into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
- Second-Generation Satellite: NVS-03 is the third of five planned second-generation satellites for NavIC. It is aimed at ensuring the continuity of indigenous navigation services.
- Atomic Clocks: NVS-03 is equipped with both indigenous and imported atomic clocks, which provide highly precise timing signals crucial for satellite-based positioning.
- New Frequency: In addition to the existing L5 and S-band signals, the satellite incorporates L1-band signals. This enhances interoperability with standard civilian navigation devices.
- NavIC Coverage: The system is designed to provide positioning, navigation, and timing services across India and an area extending approximately 1,500 km beyond its borders.
- Minimum Operational Capability: According to ISRO, the launch of NVS-03 reinstates the minimum operational configuration of four satellites in the NavIC constellation.
