Justice Uday Umesh Lalit: 49th CJI of India

On 10^th August 2022, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the 49th Chief Justice of India. He will take over the charge on 27th August, 2022.

• The present CJI Justice N V Ramana will retire on 26th August.
• Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India in August 2014.
• Justice Lalit is the 6th senior advocate ever to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court.
• He will retire on 8 November 2022 after assuming the office of Chief Justice of India for a period of seventy four days.
