Cabinet Approves 13 GW Renewable Energy Project in Ladakh

On 18^th October,2023,the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister granted approval for the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) Phase-II – Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project, focused on the development of a 13 GW Renewable Energy Project in Ladakh.

Key Points

• Project Timeline and Cost: The project is expected to be established by the fiscal year 2029-30 with a total estimated cost of Rs. 20,773.70 crore.
• Central Financial Assistance (CFA) will cover 40 percent of the project cost, amounting to Rs. 8,309.48 crore.
• Implementing Agency: Due to the challenging terrain, adverse weather conditions, and defense considerations in Ladakh, the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) will be the Implementing Agency for this initiative.
• The project will utilize state-of-the-art Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems and Extra High Voltage Alternating Current (EHVAC) systems.
