Prime Minister Inaugurates India's Longest Bridge

On 12th January, 2024, Prime Minister inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), the country's longest bridge, in Maharashtra.

Key Points

  • Cost and Length: The 21.8-km-long MTHL, developed at a cost of Rs 18,000 crore, connects Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in Uran taluka, Raigad district.
  • Named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee: The sea bridge is named Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, in honour of the former Prime Minister.
  • Reduced Travel Time: The bridge shortens the commute between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from 2 hours to just 20 minutes.
  • Vehicle Restrictions: Motorbikes, auto rickshaws, tractors, mopeds, three-wheelers, animal-drawn vehicles, and slow-moving vehicles are not allowed.
  • Traffic Projections: The MMRDA projects an average of 70,000 vehicles on the sea bridge, with an expected increase to over 1.33 lakh vehicles by 2032.
