Centre Forms High-Level Committee for Disaster Preparedness

On 30th April 2025, the Central government constituted a High-Level Committee chaired by Union Home Minister to strengthen national disaster preparedness under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

- Legal Basis: Formed under sub-section (2) of Section 8B of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
- Mandate: The panel will guide national disaster policy, ensure inter-ministerial coordination, and enhance India’s response to disasters.
- Scope of Work: It will address both natural and man-made disasters — such as floods, earthquakes, pandemics, and industrial accidents.
- Strategic Approach: The inclusion of finance, agriculture, and planning sectors reflects a multi-sectoral strategy for risk reduction and mitigation.
- Long-Term Planning: The committee will review disaster readiness of states and UTs and oversee the implementation of risk reduction frameworks.
- National Significance: With rising climate extremes and emergencies, the committee reinforces India’s commitment to proactive and resilient disaster management.
