Justice B R Gavai Becomes First Buddhist CJI

On 14th May 2025, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Justice Gavai created history as the first Buddhist and second dalit to hold the office of Chief Justice of India.
He took his oath in Hindi, pledging to uphold the Constitution and discharge his duties faithfully
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, and sitting and retired judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts.
