On 13th May 2025, the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) released its Global Report on Internal Displacement, revealing that over 595,000 people were displaced in India in 2023 due to natural disasters and violent conflict, a significant decline compared to 2022.
Key Points

- Conflict in Manipur: Violent conflict, primarily in Manipur, displaced 67,000 people in 2023, a sharp rise from just 1,000 displacements the previous year.
- El Niño Effect: Developing El Niño conditions brought drier weather and a 5.6% monsoon deficit, reducing the frequency and intensity of floods.
- Cyclone Biporjoy Impact: The severe tropical cyclone Biporjoy in June 2023 led to the displacement of 105,000 people in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
- Assam Floods: The largest flood event of 2023 occurred in Assam, where heavy rainfall displaced 91,000 people across 20 districts.
- Delhi’s Flash Flood: A record 153 mm of rainfall in Delhi on July 9, the highest in 40 years, led to the displacement of 27,000 people.
