In May 2025, the Government of India announced continued progress in maternal and child health, with India surpassing global averages and making significant strides toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030.
Key Points
- Maternal Mortality Drops Sharply: Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) reduced from 130 to 93 per lakh live births between 2014–16 and 2019–21.
- Mortality Improvement: Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) declined from 39 to 27 per 1,000 live births from 2014 to 2021.
- Neonatal Deaths Reduced: Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) fell from 26 to 19 per 1,000 live births in the same period.
- Under-Five Mortality Down: U5MR dropped from 45 to 31 per 1,000 live births between 2014 and 2021.
- Improved Sex Ratio: Sex Ratio at Birth improved from 899 in 2014 to 913 in 2021.
- Fertility Rate Steady: Total Fertility Rate maintained at 2.0 in 2021, down from 2.3 in 2014.
States Meeting SDG Targets:
- MMR (≤70 by 2030): 8 states including Kerala (20), Maharashtra (38), and Telangana (45) already achieved this goal.
- U5MR (≤25 by 2030): 12 states/UTs including Delhi (14), West Bengal (20), and Gujarat (24) have reached the target.
- NMR (≤12 by 2030): 6 states/UTs including Tamil Nadu (9) and Himachal Pradesh (12) have met the SDG target.
