“EnviStats 2025”

On 5th June 2025, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the eighth edition of “EnviStats India 2025: Environment Statistics”, offering a detailed overview of India’s environmental trends, based on data collected from various government departments and structured under the global Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (FDES) 2013.

  • The publication was launched during a National Workshop focused on using alternate data sources and frontier technologies for policy formulation, and includes newly added indicators and structural reforms recommended by an expert group of stakeholders.
  • India’s thermal power generation witnessed a sharp rise from 7,92,053 GWh in 2013–14 to 13,26,549 GWh in 2023–24, while electricity generated from renewable sources surged from 65,520 GWh to 2,25,835 GWh in the same period.
  • Inland fish production nearly doubled over the past decade, increasing from 61.36 lakh tonnes in 2013–14 to 139.07 lakh tonnes in 2023–24, reflecting substantial growth in freshwater fisheries and aquaculture.
  • The average annual mean temperature in India rose from 25.05°C in 2001 to 25.74°C in 2024, with both minimum and maximum temperatures also showing notable increases, signaling long-term climatic warming trends.
  • Annual rainfall patterns between 2001 and 2024 showed considerable variability due to monsoonal influence, though no consistent upward or downward trend was detected over this period.
