World Food Safety Day 2025

On 7th June 2025, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda addressed the World Food Safety Day 2025 event in Bengaluru, launching a major initiative under FSSAI to tackle obesity through safer and healthier eating.

  • Themed “Stop Obesity by Eating Safe and Healthy,” the event was organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, highlighting the urgent need to address rising obesity levels.
  • The Minister launched FSSAI’s “Awareness Initiative to Stop Obesity” under the Eat Right India programme to spread nationwide awareness about obesity-related health risks.
  • Citing findings from the ICMR–INDIAB study, Nadda expressed concern over a 39.6% rise in obesity in urban India and 23.1% in rural areas between 2008 and 2020.
  • He warned that if current trends continue, nearly one-third of India’s population could be obese by 2050, posing a major threat to the country’s public health goals.
  • The campaign focuses on inclusivity, with communication materials available in regional languages and sign language, and extensive outreach through FM radio, train announcements, and digital platforms.
